This measures your blood sugar level after an overnight fast (not eating). A blood glucose test is a blood test primarily used to detect diabetes by measuring the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. It measures the percentage of blood sugar bound to hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. Due to conflicting findings, there are currently no alternative therapies that are recommended to help all people control their blood sugar.
If you take medications that lower blood sugar, including insulin, your blood sugar level can drop for many reasons. Low blood sugar also occurs if you give too much insulin or too much of a glucose-lowering medication that causes the pancreas to retain insulin. Treatment for type 1 diabetes includes insulin injections or the use of an insulin pump, frequent blood sugar checks, and carbohydrate counting. Depending on the type of diabetes you have, blood sugar control, insulin, and oral medications may be part of your treatment.
Others prevent the production and release of glucose from the liver, meaning that less insulin is needed to get sugar to cells. These tests include a glucose meter and a test strip, which show the blood sugar result in a matter of seconds. The symptoms of type 1 diabetes usually start suddenly and are usually the reason for controlling blood sugar levels. For some people with prediabetes, early treatment can bring blood glucose levels back to normal levels.
The OGTT is a two-hour test that measures blood glucose levels before and two hours after drinking a special sweet drink. Insulin cannot be given orally to lower blood sugar because enzymes in the stomach interfere with the action of insulin. It can be adjusted to deliver more or less insulin depending on meals, activity level, and blood sugar level. Low blood sugar levels are best treated with carbohydrates that can be quickly absorbed by the body, such as fruit juice or glucose tablets.
Your provider will also order a blood glucose test if you have symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) or low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia).
